Masterclass with Professor Steven Fuller
Location
Edinburgh Napier University, Craiglockhart Campus
219 Colinton Road Room 3/09 (ask at Reception!) Edinburgh EH14 1DJ United KingdomDescription
This interactive masterclass will be led by Professor Steve Fuller from the University of Warwick (www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/soc/sociology/staff/academicstaff/sfuller/). Professor Fuller has a background in history and philosophy of science and has developed the field of ‘social epistemology’, which also has roots in information science. A good recent example of his work is this piece on the place of interdisciplinarity in academic knowledge production: http://items.ssrc.org/what-is-the-problem-for-which-interdisciplinarity-is-the-solution/. Under Professor Fuller’s guidance students will explore a range of research philosophies applicable to information science and related domains. The session will be of value to students at all points in the PhD process.
Afternoon refreshments will be provided during the master class. Travel expenses will be reimbursed for Information Science students travelling from Scottish Universities and we have limited funding for students who may require overnight accommodation in Edinburgh.
Doctoral students attending this event may also wish to attend the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIST) Annual Lecture which will be given by Professor Steve Fuller after the master class. Details of the lecture and how to register may be found at: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/asist-annual-lecture-2016-with-professor-steve-fuller-tickets-27891822191

The Scottish Graduate School of Social Science is the UK's largest facilitator of funding, training and support for doctoral students in social science. By combining the expertise of sixteen universities across Scotland, the school facilitates world-class PhD research. The school is funded jointly by the Economic and Social Research Council and the Scottish Funding Council.
SGSSS is a highly attractive environment for doctoral research. Not only do our partner universities offer an excellent research environment, we also offer comprehensive and world-class research training in a number of discipline-specific and interdisciplinary pathways. In addition, the school manages a programme of advanced training courses and an annual summer school which together offers our students further opportunities to develop their research, knowledge exchange and transferable professional skills.
At the heart of the SGSSS is the Doctoral Training Partnership (formerly the Doctoral Training Centre) in Scotland. The SGSSS was established in 2011 and is the biggest of 14 Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC) accredited DTPs in the United Kingdom. The bid for renewed funding has been successful and from 1 October 2017 the SGSSS will be one of the ESRC's 14 Doctoral Training Partnerships (DTP).
